Brown brick goes by on both sides.
Wet asphalt, reflecting sky, lights my way through this alley. The
smack, squeak rhythm of my shoes skips a beat as I hang a right
toward the back door of Misty Windows Porn Shop.
I stop.
A blanket lies under the store’s
back doorsteps like a crumpled tortilla.
“Fricking
bums.”
The brick and
asphalt around me echo their agreement.
I wear the polyester pants and
pressed shirt around here. This badge on my chest, th... Continue reading ...

Ray sat on the couch without knowing what to say or think. He hadn’t
touched his beer during the Cathy Kipling show, but now the can
called to him from the coffee table.
He gulped down its bitter numbness. The weed he’d smoked on the
way home from work wasn’t working anymore.
Ray complained to his refle... Continue reading ...

Later. Siera
watched Cathy say, “Hi everybody, welcome back. We’re discussing
schizophrenia.”
The camera turned
on Siera. All she could think about was how she looked. The
makeover people had performed a miracle on her appearance. They
even gave her a red blouse and khakis to wear. Is it enough,
she wondered. Will they all see how craz... Continue reading ...

Siera was going to be on Television!
This was it: her fifteen minutes of fame. She could hardly believe
it. Then again, she could hardly believe anything she saw those
days.
She’d been
delusional for over a month now, and she didn’t recall much about
her latest episode. No. The last thing she remembe... Continue reading ...

wasn’t normal.
He had never known
his father. That made him an actual bastard. He lived in his mom’s
house, but his mom was rarely at home. Or, when she was at the
house, her head was somewhere else. She spent a lot of time in

A Novel Written and Copyrighted By Timothy E. Miller http://timotheus.synthasite.com Prologue
Colorado is California’s second coming. Most Americans see Colorado as the home of The Rocky Mountains. Songs, poems, travel books, and ski passes feature the state’s mounds as if they’re some piece of heaven plunked down between the Great Plains and the remnants of the Wild West. But any Coloradoan will tell you the not-so-purple-mountain-majesty part makes up the unimportant half of the state. A... Continue reading ...

My hand covers the product before I
have a chance to scan the bar code. The training manager taught us
never to make a big deal when we run these things over the scanner,
so I glance anywhere, except at the woman or her purchase. My gaze
moves to the empty conveyor belt to my right as the items name and
price come up on my cash register.
They all look alike: these boxes.
Their misty pink and baby blue over white coloring eases the
customer's min... Continue reading ...

“We ran out of food at 2:46 p.m. Mr.
President.”
“Thank you Violet. Please, call me
Frank. I say let formalities die like everything else. How's the
surface looking today?”
“No one can tell sir. It's still
pitch black up there. The rest of the world must be dead by now. No
one has pounded on the airlocks for six months.”
“So we're the last ones on earth?”
He asks... Continue reading ...
